Chysauster

Chysauster is the remains of an Iron Age village to the north west of Penzance near New Mill. Originally built on a hill, so its inhabitants could have a fantastic vantage point for security reasons, the village seems surprisingly sheltered considering its proximity to the Penwith moors. It was built around 100BC and was lived in until 400AD after which it was forgotten about until it was excavated in the late 19th Century. Chysauster comprises of 8 houses, each with their own courtyard built around a connecting street. There are also Iron Age fields around the village. There is also the remains of a fougou. Chysauster is one of the best preserved Iron Age villages in the UK. It is now maintained by English Heritage and as part of that, they have artists impressions of how the village would have looked in its heyday. Chysauster is a sight not to be missed for anyone who is interested in Ancient History.
