  • "I felt the property was well appointed and well maintained."

First impressions as you walk through the door we're very good. The lounge was clean and tidy, with excellent rustic decor with flag stone flooring. There are two comfortable sofa's adjacent to a log burner fire place. The kitchen is small has everything you would want for an extended stay. Large oven, microwave, dishwasher, granite worktops and butler sink. Going upstairs, halfway up is a lovely feature (backdoor which opens out on to a small area adjacent to the stream. Upstairs there are two double bedrooms, both clean with comfortable beds. The bathroom is small but functional. There are two small points which this lovely property down slightly. Firstly is the shower only having a half glass wall screen, unfortunately the water can go onto the bathroom floor. Secondly, we found mold on the windows of both bedrooms and bathrooms. If these point we're fixed I'd give the property full marks.

  • "We had the best time at Ruby's cottage ."

.we didnt want to leave & miss the gentle sound of the stream as we drifted off to sleep in the most comfortable bed. Well equipped kitchen...everything you need for a week away. High quality furnishings...loved everything about it. 2 minutes walk to the river & lovely walks. We used the cottage as a base & were out & about each day. Even went to a local sheep show which was a lovely Yorkshire Dale's experience. I spoke with the owner before we arrived who picked up straight away & was most helpful & friendly ...I only wanted to ask if there was a hair dryer ( which there is) & we had a chat. Don't let the Negative Nigels & Nellie's but you off ..get it booked your in for a treat. Not too many of you though as we would like to book again for next year .. Thank you for sharing your bolthole with us ... Skye our weimeraner loved it ...she is not allowed upstairs at home so absolutely didnt bother her nor did she attempt too go upstairs.

Thank you so much for your lovely feedback. We love the cottage too & like nothing better than escaping to enjoy a few days in gorgeous Sedbergh. Property Owner

  • "Can’t believe this property had such a high tick rating (the reason I booked)."

For me the biggest problems were: no hot water in a morning before 8.30am; terrible bed, so uncomfortable that we had to leave early and check into a hotel; right next to a busy and noisy road and council estate so not a countryside location; the external rubbish bin was full when we arrived and no firewood as promised in the welcoming email; it is tiny, which is OK and actually cosy, but it is jammed in next neighbours so no privacy. Not much in Sedbergh, except the school, so you pretty much have to drive everywhere.

  • "What is described as a pleasant sitting out area is actually an old bench with a dirty bath mat on facing the road next to the front door."

There is however a nice stream outside the back door which would be nice to sit in with your morning tea if only the table and chairs were usable unfortunately they were filthy and seemed to have been that way for some time ( who wants to buy cleaning products and start scrubbing whilst your on holiday) I don’t think the owner or sykes have visited in quite some time as it no longer looks as nice as the photos and the property needs much more care and cleaning than it’s getting before guests arrive. There was no hot water when we arrived and we could get no answer from the property mngr but the owner was able to help , unfortunately you wait an hour if there’s not enough hot water from heating up the night before . I again tried the property mngr by sending the following txt There are a number of hygiene issues in the cottage that I have not mentioned but the fact that there is only one hand towel and one towel each (no face towels) for a week , now I have gone to use a towel and there is a pubic hair on it ! This is disgraceful and I would like some clean ones , as it does say there provided and I've paid for a four person cottage I again got no reply and never heard from anyone for the rest of the holiday and didn’t want to stress myself out and spoil my break by keep chasing them up. It would be good to know before you book a property that allows dogs to know if they are excluded from certain areas of the house and then it’s your choice if you go ahead with the booking. Although I wasn’t expecting toilet roll to be supplied , it had been but only after using it did I find feaces on the roll. There are some sort of window panels in left standing in the bedrooms and the cutlery draw was broken .

  • "Cosy little cottage however probably more 4* than 5*."

Dish washer is not working so should be taken off the list of facilities if not repaired or replaced. The top drawer in the kitchen unit which holds the cutlery could be pulled right out of its runners which is dangerous if you are not careful so it should be repaired. All in all a pleasant stay.

  • "Upon arrival the "parking for one vehicle" was on the pavement and to park on the road outside the house would have given passing vehicles restricted views of oncoming vehicles."

The microwave was clearly not working when we arrived but we found neither was the dishwasher. Drawers falling apart and foil on the oven trays to cover up old stained trays. The house generally was very damp and needed additional heating. There were snail/slug trails on the walls (even across the picture frame) and floor of the kitchen. One of the vacuum cleaners extracted dust and grit instead of taking it in. Rather than replace very tired window frames secondary windows have been put in but the existing windows had not been cleaned so leaving very dirty window ledges clearly visible (and windows dirty). I have used Sykes cottages on several occasions before and I must stress I do not class this as 5 star by any stretch of the imagination and I would request that Sykes reconsider their rating. Very poor.

  • "Lovely little cottage with gorgeous double bedrooms and lovely shower."

Great that it was dog friendly however the garden is literally 1 metre wide with a drop to a creek below so not ideal as has to take the dog across the road and to the field to go to the loo. Kitchen hob didn’t work - advised Sykes but got to reply. Luckily we were eating out but would’ve been nice to have had a cooked breakfast. Shower room lovely however blind tied in place so unable to lower over the window. Windows unable to open down stairs so wasn’t well ventilated. Nice and quiet though.

  • "Unfortunately we had to cut our stay short and left 3 days early."

The property’s condition and cleanliness were shocking and despite trying hard to get used to it we couldn’t manage to stay there the whole week. The cottage is very worn out, neglected and simply put dirty. Kitchen is falling apart with cutlery drawer only opening half way through with- even that with great noise and effort! Sofas and all soft furnishing dirty that we had to put spare bedding sheets over it so that we could sit down and relax at the end of the day. Left over food everywhere including freezer and cupboards… Under the stairs cupboard with washing machine and hoover - all so dirty that you’d rather not go near it. Cobb webs everywhere - and I mean in very visible places Having read through some previous reviews it seems like the owner simply does not care as issues pointed out by previous guests still exist. Needless to say- very overpriced. Area itself is lovely- but that’s the Lake District in general Had knocks on doors from ‘travellers’ as area flooded by them camping 2 min walk away from the cottage; annual thing around this time, I’ve learnt, due to horse show taking place this weekend… again would be nice if this was mentioned on the advert; certainly not a relaxing environment to be in getting knocks on a door from strangers. Pluses- Beds were very comfortable Texted numbers provided on leaving- stating my disappointment and early leave - got the response from caretaker to say she will pass it onto the owner- however no sign of good gesture to at least partially compensate for the ruined holiday.

Perfect place for access to Kendal and surrounding areas. The bed was absolutely amazing and had some of the best night sleeps I’ve had in months! What I would say is, the kitchen is looking a little sad and in need of some love. Apart from that we would very much recommend and would love to come back and visit again.

We didn’t need to use the car as there was plenty of walks to choose from, however we did to explore other areas. The town it self we would definitely return to as had plenty to offer in the way of essential shops and eateries. The cottage was comfortable enough, just slightly disappointed that there was no nice outside seating to enjoy G&Ts after a good day out! The rear offered no pleasant seating and dropped steep to stream. The front seat was not ideal either as the outlook was our parked car! Shame. The bathroom radiator is not working which would have been useful to have on as when the temperature dropped. Overall we had a good stay and not a lot to grumble about!

About the location

SEDBERGH

Kendal 11.5 miles; Kirkby Lonsdale 11.8 miles, Hawes 15.8 miles.

The attractive old market town of Sedbergh (pronounced Sed-Ber), with its old-world atmosphere, is not only set in the magnificent western dales of the Yorkshire Dales National Park but is also close to the rugged eastern fells of the Lake District. The town, with its narrow streets, little shops, traditional pubs, famous school dating back to 1525 and its 12th century church, has been a thriving community for hundreds of years, with a market dating from the 13th Century. Leading from Sedbergh is Dentdale, the jewel of the Yorkshire Dales with its rolling hills and dry-stone walls, stretching 14 miles from the windswept moors below Whernside to the confluence of the Rivers Dee and Rawthey. At the centre of the dale is Dent, with its cobbled streets, which has existed since Norman times and nearby Dent railway station is on the renowned Settle-Carlisle railway line. There are three golf courses nearby, as well as tennis, riding, and fishing, and the area is a paradise for walkers, ramblers, runners, and cyclists. This, together with the tranquillity of the surrounding valleys, the two National Parks and it being England's book town, makes an ideal year-round holiday destination.
