  • "Archway Cottage was the perfect venue for a Christmas for our family of 5 adults and exceeded our expectations."

It has great character, while being warm and comfortable, an unbeatable location for walking around Burford, and access to a magnificent garden on the banks of the Windrush.

  • "Fabulous cottage, ideal for large families and for those who want to be near the village's amenities and shops etc, but still on a very pretty set up."

The cottage is very well maintained and very clean however we found an used tampax in the washing machine. Bedsheets also were not super fresh and crispy and the beautiful patio was a little neglected but overall the cottage was spotless. We very much enjoyed our stay and had all the comforts and more!

Really well equipped with the lovely touch of a basket of treats on arrival. Conveniently located in a lovely town with everything you could need within a short walk, lovely shops and places to dine. Would highly recommend Archway cottage, we had a amazing family holiday and would love to book again in the future, Thank you

  • "Great property but such a shame it let itself down."

Sykes were quick to respond, but no heating or hot water on first night, en suite inoperative shower and basin hot tap & blocked kitchen gulley. The cover was off the boiler and the trap cover removed from shower so I think someone was aware beforehand ? Try better next time

Thank you for providing this feedback. We're so sorry that you encountered an issue with the heating and hot water at the beginning of your stay but did try to solve the problem as quickly as possible once notified. Best wishes Manor Cottage Property Owner

We absolutely fell in love with the cottage and it’s many comforts. We will definitely be back the next time we visit. This place is a gem !!

  • "We had a fantastic stay during the December break."

My only observation is not to assume everyone celebrates Christmas and wants such a large tree in the living area. A smaller one that can be put away if not needed would probably be better. That is only personal preference and it didn’t stop us from having a lovely time in the beautiful cottage. Xxx

Thank you for taking the time to leave a feedback, good point for us to consider in further Christmas bookings. Property Owner

  • "The cottage is lovely & cosy it is ideal for walking out to explore the many pubs, restaurants & cafes in Burford which is a very pretty village albeit the parking is a challenge."

The kitchen & bathroom fixtures & fittings are all done to a very high standard, the only concern is the en-suite bedroom overlooks the main road which could do with double glazing to reduce the noise levels of the traffic.

Many thanks for your feedback! Property Owner

The property

This spectacular, period property sits in the very centre of the medieval town of Burford, in the glorious Oxfordshire countryside, part of the Cotswolds Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

Sleeping six guests with the option to sleep two extra, Archway Cottage is the ideal base for families or friends to explore this beautiful part of the world, with the property believed to date back to the 16th century, evolving over many centuries.

At one time, Archway Cottage was a coaching inn called The King’s Arms, with evidence of cart tracks in the cobblestones left by horses and carts as they passed through to access the stables, now outbuildings, at the rear of the property.

On entering the cottage, admire the obvious thought and care that has gone into providing luxurious accommodation within such a unique property, with contemporary features seamlessly placed alongside original beams, painted supports and rustic timber doors.

The fully equipped kitchen and dining room provides a complete range of modern appliances to cater for your every need, including two fridges, a range cooker, and a dishwasher, all fitted within attractive green units.

Come together around the large, farmhouse style dining table to enjoy your beautifully prepared meals, with cold winter evenings made better with the woodburning stove set within the inglenook to keep you warm.

From this room, access the private enclosed courtyard, where on warmer summer evenings you can enjoy a pre-dinner aperitif in the evening sun.

Once your meal has been enjoyed, retire to the elegant sitting room with parquet flooring, relaxing with a good book or enjoying the latest offering on the cleverly disguised Smart TV.

Make your way to the first floor to find two stunning bedrooms; the master double leads into a beautifully appointed en-suite bathroom, comprising of both a free-standing bath and a walk-in shower, while the super-king-size four poster bed is a gorgeous place to unwind, with lovely views across to the famous spire of Burford church.

The first floor is completed by the lovely family bathroom, also housing the washing machine, while up on the second floor is the third bedroom, equipped with a double and two single beds, ideal for families, especially those with younger children.

Outside the property, guests have full access to the owner's extensive and amazing garden, where you will quickly forget that you are actually in the middle of the town; have a picnic or feed the ducks on the bank of the River Windrush, which winds its way through the garden.

From your front door, you can explore Burford, and take advantage of the multitude of cafés, pubs and restaurants that the town has to offer, as well as visit the Tolsey Museum located in a 16th century building illustrating the town’s social and industrial past.

A scenic drive can bring you to the equally delightful Bourton-on-the-Water, known as the Venice of the Cotswolds, and Stow-on-the-Wold, each steeped in rich heritage.

A little further afield lies the lovely town of Woodstock, perhaps best known as the home of Blenheim Palace, the World Heritage site, and birthplace of Winston Churchill.

For younger members of your party, two miles away you have both The Cotswold Wildlife Park, and rather surprisingly for rural Oxfordshire, Crocodiles of the World!

Walkers and cyclists can take advantage of this wonderful Cotswolds location, soaking up the spectacular scenery of rolling countryside along a network of walking and cycling trails and bridleways.

Explore the city of Oxford and its abundance of attractions, including its university, Bodleian Library, Ashmolean and Pitt Rivers Museums and Botanic Gardens, and why not hop on a boat trip along the River Thames, before stopping off for a refreshing glass of wine at a pretty, riverside pub?

Train links also provide easy access to London, ideal for a day trip in a bustling atmosphere.

Never be short of things to do in the beautiful Cotswolds at Archway Cottage.

On street parking.

About the location

BURFORD

Swinbrook 2.4 miles; Little Barrington 3.5 miles; Minster Lovell 5.6 miles.

Burford is possibly one of, if not the most famous of the Cotswolds' locations. With its medieval bridge, old stone houses and attractive Tudor and Georgian frontages, it is justifiably one of the most picturesque towns in England. Often referred to as the 'Gateway to the Cotswolds', the town was originally a fortified Anglo-Saxon ford which later grew to be an important regional crossroads and wealthy wool town. Located midway between Oxford and Cheltenham, it is a little haven of history and beauty that many come to fall in love with when they visit. The 16th century Tolsey building, once the meeting place for medieval merchants, now houses The Tolsey Museum, a delightful local museum illustrating the town's social and industrial past. The church is stunning, a real gem architecturally with many interesting memorials charting some of Burford's great families. There is also the signature, on the baptisimal font, of Antony Sedley, one of the Levellers besieged in the church in 1649 - three of the ringleaders were executed by Oliver Cromwell's men in the churchyard. History awaits! With little change over the centuries, Burford is now very popular with visitors, both for its beauty and history but also for its shopping and antiques, and for the wide variety of places to eat, with restaurants, pubs and tea shops. It is an ideal base for visiting The Cotswolds area as it is within easy driving distance of popular attractions such as Blenheim Palace, Sudeley Castle, Warwick Castle and several National Trust Houses and Gardens. Bourton on the Water, Bibury, Cirencester and Stow on the Wold are all within ten miles.

Please be aware: this property dates back to the 16th century and has many quirky features associated with a property of this age. It has low beams and low doorways (especially in the family bedroom on the 2nd floor).
Please note: guests have access to the owner's stunning grounds - but be advised that the River Windrush flows through the garden (approx 80 metres from the cottage) and care needs to be taken if there are young children in the party.
