  • "We had a wonderful stay."

The apartment is amazing, everything we needed. Susan was extremely helpful. There was a very thoughtful welcome pack and some useful detailed information about the acommodation and area. The apartment has been very tastefully modernised in keeping with its original character and features. The rooms are spacious yet cosy. Everything we touched was of high quality. The location is perfect for trips to the local tourist attractions. The grounds are perfect for excercising your dog. We are very impressed, and have already recommend to family members. A big thank you to Susan and her partners. A very relaxed and happyJenny and Tony Daviies!

  • "Best Christmas ever due to this wonderful property!"

The pictures didn't do it justice. It was absolutely wonderful. The property was spotless and the owners had prepared it to be so welcoming as we walked in the door. A very generous welcoming pack and lamps switched on to welcomed us in. Our 27 yo. son who is not known to be effusive in his comments walked in and said "This is fantastic"!!!

  • "We stayed a week and it was amazing honestly !"

The property was beautiful, clean and cosy. The blankets, furniture and ornaments made the place feel homelike. Location was great for us and the recommendations in the book were great. If we had one constructive suggestion it would be a place to dispose of general waste as it told us to leave rubbish in the bin, we had a lot which we felt guilty to leave in such a beautiful place and not get rid of ourselves before departing. Thank you so much for our stay and making us feel welcome, we will definitely be recommending this place to friends and family.

It is clean and comfortable and so well equipped. The rooms are beautifully furnished, sympathetic to the age of the property and the hosts are helpful and friendly, very welcoming. We travelled with our dog who loved the freedom of the grounds. We would definitely recommend.

  • "Lovely old building with high ceiling rooms, large bedrooms, equipped with all you need including a fast wifi."

Very helpful hosts. Close to Whitehaven and the western lakes. A dog walk just 5 mins walk away. The shower cubicle is a bit small but the shower is powerful and refreshing. All in all a nice stay.

  • "Had a fantastic weekend here with my dog."

The hosts were very friendly and left a lovely welcome gift of food and wine. The building and grounds are a bit tired looking in places but this didn’t bother me as I think it adds to the character of the place. It’s a very old property and feels like a stately home so if you want modern it’s not the place for you. Quiet private location but close to local town with all facilities. Lovely lake to walk round with your dog 5 minutes walk away. Perfect location for both seaside and lakes.

  • "It’s difficult to put into words the experience of turning up to such a beautiful, historic house as but from the moment we arrived through the gates of Ehen Hall and up that driveway we felt it was a special place."

The house has been beautifully and tastefully restored, still maintaining so much of its history but with many modern comforts and every need well catered for. The cleanliness and attention to detail leaves you feeling instantly at home and relaxed and the owners couldn’t do enough to make our stay as enjoyable as possible. Thank you and we will definitely be returning

The property

Resting on the outskirts of Cleator in Cumbria and set in the wonderful Ehen Hall is The Residence.

This well-appointed apartment is set over three floors and has a charming sense of character woven throughout thanks to feature fireplaces and exposed beams; it also affords access to the beautiful grounds of Ehen Hall and welcomes four guests and their canine companion.

Cross the threshold into your new home-from-home, step into the fully-equipped kitchen/diner and help the group’s designated chef rustle up a tasty meal.

Gather around the table and tuck in before stepping outside to soak up the last of the sun.

On colder nights snuggle up with your loved ones in the sitting room and settle in for a film night with tasty treats.

When the evening draws to a close, head upstairs for some much-needed rest; the first floor houses a large bedroom with a super-king-size bed and adjacent shower room.

The second floor hosts another spacious bedroom with exposed beams and a king-size bed.

Outside, Ehen Hall is set in seven acres of secluded, private grounds, large lawns surrounded by mature trees, so plenty of space to enjoy, relax, exercise your dog, or just have a wander about in the fresh air.

Paces away from the entrance gate is Longlands Lake.

A complete circuit is less than a mile, or just take a seat on one of the many benches and enjoy the resident swans and ducks cavorting on the water.

In the village of Cleator, St. Leonards Church dates to Henry 1, there is also a small village shop for your essentials, and within walking distance, you’ll find a country hotel with a dog-friendly bar.

A short drive away takes you to Egremont with lots of take away food options, breakfast/lunch time cafés, local craft, and some budget supermarkets.

By car, you can also reach the beach at St. Bees.

Lots of history going back to Norman times, good pubs, beach café with great ice cream, and a moderate walk up the cliff to St. Bees head affords great views over the Irish Sea to the Isle of Man and the hills of southern Scotland.

A scenic short drive in the other direction is all you need to get to Ennerdale Water; a serene and quiet lake with options ranging from a relaxing sit down absorbing the beautiful scenery to gentle forest walks/cycling, to scaling challenging peaks.

Afterwards, two great pubs and a contemporary community run café reward your efforts.

Whitehaven, our nearest “large” town is also nearby, where you’ll find a lovely harbour, great Georgian architecture, enormous history including maritime, railway, mining and strong links to empire sensitively acknowledged in our museums and attractions.

Beyond this, in approximately 30 minutes, the Wasdale valley boasts England’s highest mountain, deepest lake and smallest church; again, the walks range from pleasant, gentle strolls to very challenging.

There is so much more to say, but we hope something here has inspired you to visit west Cumbria and The Residence.
